Appendix A: polar file format

A polar file is a collection of TWA/BSP value pairs for a certain amount of TWS values. Polar files are basic text files that can be easily viewed and edited using e.g. Notepad, TextEdit and Microsoft Excel.

It is recommended to have a polar file with a high TWA granularity, especially in the detailed parts of your polar. It is also recommended to include values representing TWA=180.

With respect to the file format the following restrictions are in place:

  • the decimal separator must be a point. E.g. 1.2

  • the first column must contain TWS values in knots. Values must increase with every line.

  • other columns: every first column must contain a TWA value in degrees followed by a BSP value in knots in the second column. TWA values must increase with every column.

  • values must be separated by one or more spaces or a single tab.

  • at least 4 TWA/BSP columns are required.

  • a comment can be added by starting the line with a '!' character.

When importing a polar file the following errors might occur:

  • "cannot find polar file": the polar.txt file cannot be found on the cloud storage.

  • "syntax error in polar.txt file on line X" : there is likely a problem with the format of any of the numbers. Ensure the decimal separator is a point.

  • "value out of range in polar.txt file on line X": ensure that each TWS value is in range 1..100, each TWA value is in range 0..180 and each BSP value is in range 0..200.

  • "number of columns should be odd": the first non-commented line in the file defines the columns. The amount of these columns should be an odd value, i.e. a TWS column followed by one or more pairs of TWA and BSP columns.

  • "at least 4 (TWA, BSP) column pairs are required": at least 4 pairs of TWA and BSP columns are required.

  • "unequal number of columns between rows": every row must have an equal amount of columns.
